Pre-Primary
At St. Dominic Savio High School we believe that a pre-schooler learns well when he is happy and when given an opportunity to explore his environment by using a multisensory approach thus involving all his senses, by observing and by questioning. A pre-schooler is also given an opportunity to express himself freely thus enhancing his cognitive ability. We endeavor to optimize a child’s holistic development.
Our session includes skills like language development, numerical concepts, environmental study, art and craft, music and movement, indoor –outdoor activities and gymnastics.
Pre-Primary daily routine: The school begins at 8am for Senior Kindergarten. They have five periods and school winds up at 10:30am. The next session of the Junior Kindergarten begins at 11am right up till 1:15pm with a total of 5 periods. Each of the sessions have a 15 minute snack break.
School Uniform: White and blue pin stripe shirt, navy blue pant, black socks, black Velcro shoes and I.D. card. Short (military) hair cut. Navy blue cardigan in winter.
Academics: We have 25 students in each class thus assuring every child gets the personalized attention of his teacher. To enhance the learning process a specially set daily syllabus is chalked out for the students. The students move from one learning centre to another to learn different subjects and skills as the day progresses.
The classrooms have a colourful and creative display of drawings, collages and paintings of the children. Subject oriented worksheets are displayed.
Child’s creativity is expressed through clay modeling and designing using indigenous materials. Activities like paper tearing, paper crumpling, paper folding and sticking, colouring and allied activities help the fine muscles develop (pincer and palm development).
In the environmental study class activities provide complete freedom to the children allowing them to explore and experiment with materials given according to their imaginations.
Writing of alphabets and numerals is reinforced by activities using concrete objects along with worksheets, slateswork and conversation in English, oral recitation and phonetic skills which help the children learn vocabulary, prewriting skills and sequential order.
Other Co-Curricular activities: Gymnastics is introduced for the Senior Kindergarten. Gymnastic exercises help the small and large muscles development. Each class has gymnastics twice a week.
Junior Kindergarten has outdoor activities like running, jumping, kicking the ball, hopping, etc which help the large muscles development.
Occupational therapy is introduced for the Junior Kindergarten students where a therapist meticulously assesses the overall potential of each child. This therapy helps children develop better co-ordination, balance, prewriting skills and improve social interaction.
We have various competitions, field trips, picnics, sports day and festival celebrations which help the children get a hands on learning experience through fun and frolic.
Evaluation: The purpose of evaluation at this tender age is not to adjudge the three best (we do not have this system in our school. We allot grades) but to take note of the strengths and weaknesses of every child so that the strengths are further strengthened and the weaknesses worked upon and uplifted or eliminated. Therefore right through the year the performances of the children are recorded in an evaluation book. The school lays emphasis on character formation as well as on academic excellence.
